THE OSCAR NOMINATIONS FOR BEST JEWELLERY…
The best jewellery moments from the 2023 Oscar nominated films, and some hopeful red carpet predictions.
I love film, I love what jewellery communicates in film, I love seeing what jewellery is considered worthy of celebrating film on the red carpet.
Triangle of Sadness, nominated for Oscars in: Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.
In Triangle of Sadness, we are introduced to an ensemble cast including a model/influencer, weapons dealers, a manure magnate and his wife (and girlfriend) and watch as their luxury cruise splinters and eventually ruptures into chaos. Some of the ridiculous characters’ most grotesque moments happen as they’re adorned with expensive jewellery, a perverse demonstration of their obsession with wealth and status that plays to the film’s core message.
A diamond half-rivière necklace acts as a portent in the final, spectacular scene, dangling like the sword of Damocles.
Tár, nominated for 6 Oscars including Best Actress for Cate Blanchett, Best Picture, and Best Director.
Cate Blanchett wears a 1950s Rolex as the film’s eponymous lead Lydia Tár, and her strictly minimalist, gender-fluid tailoring is true to the character’s unique fame as one of the most famous composers in the world. Bina Daigeler, Tar’s costume designer: “Lydia isn’t big on accessories. She doesn’t wear any jewelry except for a watch, with the face on the inside of the wrist. Conductors do that so there’s no light reflection, which could irritate the musicians while they’re conducting.”
As a front runner for an Oscar win and generally accepted to be one of the most successful actors in the world, Blanchett’s Oscar’s red carpet appearance is a beacon of hope for all of us looking for MORE HIGH JEWELLERY MOMENTS!🙏
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, nominated for 4 Oscars including Best Costume Design for Ruth E Carter and Best Supporting Actress for Angela Basset.
Undoubtedly the award for most spectacular jewellery in film this year goes to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Costume designer Ruth E Carter celebrates afrofuturism, “including 3D-printed headdresses and shoulder mantles designed by Carter and produced by architect Julia Koerner.
Fingers crossed we get to see Angela Bassett in some magnificent fine jewellery at The Oscars - she has form as a fan of old-school glamour in her red carpet appearances, most recently wearing diamond jewellery by Reza and Gismondi 1754 to the film’s LA premiere.
Babylon, nominated for 3 Oscars, including Best Costume Design for Mary Zophres.
In Babylon, Margot Robbie stays faithful to her long-term Chanel partnership (some have lovingly referred to it as a ‘blood-oath’) wearing two high jewellery pieces which are “carefully placed for very specific reasons that have to do with character development,” according to costume designer Mary Zophres.
Robbie’s outfit for Babylon’s Sydney premiere was notably devoid of jewellery, and this appearance is one of the moments pointed to by pop culture commentators as signifying ‘the disappearance of red carpet jewellery’.
Dying for Robbie to choose an uncomplicated dress and the most spectacular fine jewellery set possible - inspired by the starlets of the Golden Age of cinema who were often DRIPPING in diamonds. May I suggest these Chanel jewels from last year’s ‘1932’ collection…???
